Kia Byers began kayaking when she was ten years old. Through her participation in sport she has had the opportunity to race and visit more than 7 countries on three different continents. However, Saskatchewan is still her favorite place to return to. Kia first donned the maple leaf in 2005 when she raced at the Junior World Championships where she competed in the K-4 500m and K-2 1000m events, placing 6th and 8th respectively.
In 2007 Kia raced at the Pan American Games in Rio De Jainero, where she returned home with a Gold and Bronze medal.
She will be the first to tell you that hearing the national anthem play while representing Canada and standing atop the podium is one of the greatest moments in her life. In 2009, Kia competed at her first World Championships where she raced the K-1 200m and finished 8th. She was also a member of the K-1 4x 200m Relay team that brought home a bronze medal. When Kia retires from sport she hopes to become an early childhood education teacher.
