wellnessworkshop

**The ESTEEM Team Wellness Workshop program is funded in part by, The Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport. At this time, it is only available to schools in Ontario.**

WHAT IS IT?

The ESTEEM Team Wellness Workshop program is a collaborative project between the ESTEEM Team, IFTA, and Sogo Active program that was created for youth (ages 13-19). It will motivate and educate under-serviced youth on the importance of overall wellness. This is done by implementing a youth-led, healthy active living program within schools and communities across Ontario. This program will provide youth with ongoing mentorship and support aimed at addressing the barriers related to being physical active and how to overcome them. The program intends to develop youth leaders in building healthier and supportive communities.

Paid for by the Ontario Ministy of Health Promotion and Sport, this program is provided to schools at no cost.

 WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?

ESTEEM Team Wellness Workshops will provide the following in each of the two visits over the course of the school year:

  • 2 - ESTEEM Team – Athlete Role Model Motivational Presentations, per visit:
    • 1st school visit presentation will include information on Nutrition.
    • 2nd school visit will include information on Mental Health.
  • 2 IFTA “Agility Challenge” sessions, per visit.

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM NEEDED?

When school policy is examined for physical education, many schools in Canada have school-based physical activity policies designed to improve levels of physical activity for the student population; however, the support for these policies and evidence of actual implementation is sparse (Annual report on Ontario schools. 2009; Robertson-Wilson & Levesque, 2008; Spitters &Schwartz & Veugelers, 2009).

The 2010 Healthy Active Kids report indicated that ‘there is a need for more affordable after-school physical activity and healthy living programs. Policies and programs should focus on ensuring more variety and promotion of recreational sport leagues, with strong youth led components and opportunities for programs to be designed and delivered by youth’. – This program looks to do this!
