“The Esteem Team training seminar is not a ‘course’ where you just sit down and listen. It is a sharing environment of like minded athletes and seasoned speakers where actual talking points are honed and crafted. Their team of trainers share thousands of hours of speaking experience, and provide vivid and practical tips on how to deliver a presentation.” - Josh Vander Vies, Paralympian - Boccia

Every year, members of the Esteem Team give 600 – 800 presentations to young people ages 8 - 19 throughout Canada, inspiring them to set objectives for themselves and follow their dreams.

Nick Ugoalah was full of energy and very engaging for our summer camp of 6-12 year olds.  He had everyone laughing and completely focused on him.  He was entertaining and his story brought a sense of compassion and determination to the camp for the remainder of the week.  My team and I were extremely impressed with the quality of the address and the way he interacted with the youth.  We would have Nick back any time. Keep up the awesome work ESTEEM TEAM!” - Emily Rowell, Willoughby Community Centre (Langley, BC)

Athletes joining the roster will receive an honourarium for their presentations and will be supported by Motivate Canada as they develop their public speaking skills. Those wishing to registerould register online at www.esteemteam.com and fill out the ‘athlete recruitment’ form.

What's in a story?– National Team Wrestler, Erica Weeb

I recently attended the Esteem Team Public Speaking Workshop in Edmonton, AB and it was two days of non-stop reflection, interaction, and of course speaking. There were 8 athletes who signed up to do this workshop with little idea what we were in for. The workshop was facilitated by Corey Robinson, a former wrestler, current coach, esteem team member, and one of the most animated, inspirational, and intriguing story tellers I have yet to meet.

He has a certain magnetism towards him in which crazy events occur on what seems to be a daily basis. I swear half the stuff can’t be true but he tells his stories with such evocative imagery and humour it’s hard not to imagine yourself standing there beside him as it’s all happening.

The weekend was a good exercise is sitting back and seeing where I came from and the journey I’ve taken to where I am now. We talked about sacrifice, overcoming obstacles, and setting goals something successful athletes perhaps take for granted simply because it’s part of the job. One girl, a national team ringette player described how she felt she never had to deal with sacrifice. She was always way to excited about playing her sport to think she was sacrificing anything to attend evening practice or go away on weekends.

What I’m starting to learn is that everyone has a story. Everyone is doing amazing things in their own capacity and have amazing experiences to share but it is how we decide to share these things with others that makes the difference. To pull the lessons out of everyday life is an extraordinary skill. We learn and grow from our own experiences but a good story teller or as some may say, public speaker has the ability to motivate people and inspire growth in others through their spoken word.

All I can say is, I’m working on it. I have some good stories. Mostly a list of don’t do this, and definitely don’t do that, but there is a lesson in there... somewhere. ..
